About the book

What's inside

One hundred themed word searches drawn from ordinary life and long memory: the county fair, Sunday dinner, the front porch, the sewing basket, Christmas morning and barnyard animals. Every puzzle gets its own two-page spread. The word list sits on the left in alphabetical order, and the grid has the whole right-hand page to itself, so nothing is squeezed and no puzzle is split across a turn of the page. The grids are fifteen letters square, set in 31-point bold type with capitals 7.7 millimeters tall, and the word list is larger still, at 8.7 millimeters. The book is in three sections: forty easy puzzles where words run only across and down, forty medium puzzles that add the diagonals, and twenty hard puzzles where words can run in any of eight directions, including backwards. Every answer is written out in plain words at the back, giving the row, the column it starts in and the direction it runs, instead of a shrunken grid with circles on it. Fourteen words to a puzzle, 1,400 in all. Black ink on white paper, 8.5 by 11 inches, 266 pages, with a wide inside margin so the book lies open. Published under the Good Light Press imprint by K. Terry, Volume 1 of the Good Light Large Print series. Volume 2 has a hundred different puzzles in the same format.

Questions about
this book

How big are the letters?
The grid letters are set in 31-point bold type, with capitals 7.7 millimeters tall. The word list is set at 35 point, about 8.7 millimeters. Each grid fills a whole page.
How is this different from Volume 2?
Same format, same size letters, different puzzles. Every theme and every grid in Volume 1 is new, so the two books work as a pair.
Are there diagonal or backwards words?
Only where you choose them. The first forty puzzles run across and down only. The next forty add diagonals, and the last twenty can run in any direction, including backwards.
Who is it for?
Seniors, people who find ordinary puzzle books too small, and activity staff in care settings. The themes are everyday and familiar, and the easy section can be handed to anyone.
