Somewhere in a stack of coloring books there is a Black woman with a nose too narrow and lips too thin, her hair already filled in solid black so there is nothing left for you to decide. This is not that book. Mara at Home is forty bold, open illustrations of one woman in her own house — washing her hair, sweeping her floor, pouring something warm, stretching in the morning light, sitting down in the middle of an ordinary day. She is drawn in adire indigo and bogolan mudcloth, among rattan chairs, beaded curtains, woven baskets and monstera leaves. Nothing has been pre-shaded. No gray on her skin. No black filled into her hair. Every coil, loc, braid and twist is drawn as a large open shape, waiting for whatever brown, whatever gold, whatever color you decide belongs there. Large print throughout, thick forgiving outlines, and one design per page printed single-sided so your markers stay where you put them.
